Brian Archie is team Integrator and change agent for the Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative. Since 2015, he’s helped his organization evolve from a bureaucratic task force to one solely focused on community organizing. With a particular focus on healthcare inequities, Archie and his team members have harnessed the power of narrative to bring the community closer and raise awareness around how to elevate the public narrative around racial inequities.

Abstract

In this mini case study, Brian Archie, former team integrator and change agent for the Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative, shares with us how that organization has leveraged the power of narrative to organize within the community. We take a close look at how narrative can help to organize residents—as well as institutional partners—around the social determinants of health for the Niagara Falls community. You’ll learn about the powerful ways that simply telling stories became a central part of the collaborative’s efforts around seeking the deeper connections between these stories of self and so-called stories of us—the shared values, experiences, and aspirations of the Niagara Falls community.

Brief about Brian Archie

Brian Archie is a dedicated community organizer, public health advocate, and municipal leader based in Niagara Falls, New York. As Executive Director (also known as “Integrator”) of Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative, and a member of the Niagara Falls City Council, he champions equitable access to food, mobility, housing, and health through resident-led, narrative-centered civic work.

Early Life and Education

Background and Upbringing

A lifelong resident of North End/Highland in Niagara Falls, Brian grew up in a community impacted by structural inequities—factors that fueled his lifelong commitment to health equity, civic voice, and community resilience. Raised in a family and neighborhood where mutual care was essential, he internalized the belief: “we are only as healthy as our neighbors.”

Academic Pursuits

Brian is pursuing a Bachelor’s in Business Management with a focus on Project Management through Bryant & Stratton College. His ongoing education complements his hands-on work with local health institutions and civic systems.

Professional Career

Roles in Community Health Initiatives

Since 2015, Brian has served as Co-Chair and Executive Director (Integrator) of the Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative, part of the NYS Health Foundation’s Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative. In this role, he builds bridges between civic partners, residents, and funding bodies to advance community-defined priorities like active transport, local food access, and physical wellness programs 

He also works at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, where he applies both clinical and financial perspectives to address disparities in care. Previously, he served as a Cancer Peer Educator, equipping patients with knowledge and confidence during their treatment journeys .

Leadership Positions and Contributions

Through his leadership, the Collaborative has launched resident engagement efforts such as “Walk the Falls,” weekly walking groups, community gardens, and e-bike programs. His commitment to narrative-driven organizing is rooted in the philosophy: whereas data informs funders, stories move residents 

Civic Engagement and Advocacy

Involvement in Local Government

Brian currently serves as an elected Councilman in the City of Niagara Falls, where he brings community-led insight into policy discussions around housing, infrastructure, public safety, and equity. His civic platform is directly informed by principles he fosters in his organizing work: trust-building, relational leadership, and emerging resident leadership .

Participation in Community Organizations

He chairs or serves on several local boards including:

  • Niagara Falls Housing Authority

  • Heart, Love & Soul

  • Shared Mobility Inc.

  • New York Sustainable Agriculture Working Group

  • Former Chair of the Niagara Falls Human Rights Commission

  • Member of the local NAACP chapter
    Advisory: He was appointed (July 2022) to the NY State Racial Equity Working Group to support policies related to health, justice, and minority disparities

Whether through gardening, walking clubs, or resident-led local projects, he emphasizes slow, authentic work as the foundation of sustainable change. His message is clear: “Meet people where they are,” and support them to see—and act on—their own power
